Jeff Carlsen

Manager, Saxophone

Music is not my profession (I’m a finance/accounting person), but it’s one of the most important things in my life. I want to be able to play the things that I’m thinking and feeling with as much fluency as I can, and I have so far to go.

Calling both Utah and Washington home, Jeff brings his own sound on the tenor sax. Being influenced by such greats as John Coltrane, Bob Mintzer, Michael Brecker, Chris Potter, Bob Berg, Joshua Redman, Charlie Parker, Kenny Garrett, Eric Marienthal, Rick Margitza, Phil Woods, Joe Henderson, Nick Brignola, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Pat Metheny and many others.

Beyond jazz: Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Eric Clapton, Billy Joel, Steely Dan, Allison Kraus, Brett Dennen, Ben Folds, James Taylor, Sting, Bieber (lol).

Two years of college jazz bands.

1st in Eastern Washington and 3rd in All Washington State for classical solo performance in the tenor/baritone sax division.

Selected to play baritone sax in Washington’s All-State Jazz Ensemble.

Numerous Outstanding Soloist and Jazz Instrumentalist awards at various jazz festivals (such as the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival, Reno Jazz Festival, Berkeley Jazz Festival and others).

Louis Armstrong Jazz Award given to one musician each year at my high school.

As an adult, unless you do music as a career, the opportunities are not abundant. The Wasatch Show Band has given the me the gift of a lifetime, in terms of continuing to play and grow alongside amazing people from the community. I also have had more opportunities to inspire my own three children as they’ve discovered their own musical talents (percussion, saxophone, and trumpet).
